Generally speaking, people with high self-acceptance and self-affirmation are able to maintain healthier mental states than those who with low self-acceptance and self-affirmation.\u00a0 In a sense, self-acceptance and self-affirmation are like the immune system for mental health.<br \/>\n<b>High S<\/b><b>elf-Acceptance and Self-Affirmation<\/b><br \/>\nExamples of self-recognition among people with high self-acceptance and self-affirmation are:\u00a0\u201cI think I\u2019m cool.\u201d\u00a0\u201cI feel I\u2019m an overcomer.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI believe in myself.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m a proud geek.\u201d<br \/>\n<b>Low Self-Acceptance and Self-Affirmation<\/b><br \/>\nExamples of self-recognition among people with low self-acceptance and self-affirmation are:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m nothing\u2026\u201d\u00a0\u201cI shouldn\u2019t exist\u2026\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m garbage\u2026\u201d \u201cI always screw up things up&#8230;\u201d<br \/>\nAs our physical immune system tries to protect us from germs and viruses, our mental immune system helps us fight with various stressors in our lives.<br \/>\nFor instance, the stressor is finding out that Ms. Jane Doe, a member of your social group, has been baselessly gossiping about you behind your back. \u00a0This situation would be unpleasant and stressful for anyone, however, how much negative impact the stressor would have on you depends on how mentally immune you are.\u00a0 There will be a large discrepancy between the stressor\u2019s negative impact on people who are highly mentally immune (HMI) and those who are low mentally immune (LMI).<br \/>\n<b>People who are HMI would think: <\/b><br \/>\n\u201cWhat the\u2026. \u00a0Well, but I didn\u2019t do anything to be ashamed of, so I will just stand tall.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cOkay. I\u2019ll discuss \u00a0it with Jane in-person.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s all Jane does all the time. I kinda feel sorry for her.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m fine if she doesn&#8217;t like me.
