As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected her to ask, \u201cIs the glass half empty to half full?\u201d Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: \u201dHow heavy is this glass of water?\u201d<br \/>\nAnswers called out by the audience members ranged from 8 ounces to 20 ounces.<br \/>\nThe lecturer replied, \u201cThe absolute weight doesn\u2019t matter. How long you hold it up is what\u2019s important here.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIf you hold the glass for a minute, it\u2019s not a problem. If you hold it for an hour,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0have an ache in your arm. If you hold it for a day, your arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn\u2019t change, but the longer you hold it, the heavier it feels to you.\u201d<br \/>\nShe continued, \u201cThe stresses and worries in your life are like that glass of water.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIt is okay to think about them for a moment, but if you think about them a bit longer they begin to ache. Think about them all day long and you\u2019ll feel paralyzed \u2026 and incapable of doing anything.\u201d (Author unknown)<br \/>\nThe moral of the story is: Learn to set down the glass. Let go of your stress.<br \/>\nSometimes stress is unavoidable and there is no quick solution. Many of us have been taught that being mentally tough means holding up that glass no matter how much your arm aches and shakes, but true mental toughness, real emotional intelligence is recognizing how you can manage your stress and setting down the glass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next issue\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nI will discuss triggers of stress and methods to help you \u201cPut the glass down\u201d.
