The main message of the World Suicide Prevention Day campaign is: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iasp.info\/wspd2019\/take-a-minute\/\"><b>Take a Minute<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Take a minute to notice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what is going on with you, your family, your friends and your colleagues.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Take a minute to reach out<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and start a conversation if you notice something is different.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Take a minute to find out<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what help is available for both you and others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s take a minute to educate ourselves about suicide, prevention strategies and resources.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stigma surrounding suicide makes the issue difficult to talk about and often stops us from doing what we can do to help prevent a loss of life. People are also hesitant to intervene because they are not sure what to say and are afraid they will make the situation worse. Evidence shows that a genuine offer of support and compassionate non-judgmental listening are more likely to reduce distress rather than exacerbate it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Statistics<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800,000 people are lost to suicide across the world yearly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada, there are 10 suicide deaths and 250 more suicide attempts on a daily basis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicide is one of the top ten causes of death in Canada.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the causes?<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence has indicated that one of the most common risk factors for suicide is a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnosis of a mental health problem or illness. According to the recent statistics, of the approximately 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">000 deaths by suicide each year, more than 90% were living with a mental health problem or illness.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who die by suicide don\u2019t necessarily want to end their lives. They often want to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop significant or unbearable mental, emotional or physical pain. They want to end their suffering or put an end to a situation that seems overwhelming to them.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>What are the signs?<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warning signs that might suggest that you or someone you know\u00a0 is at risk of suicide include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0thinking or talking about suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0having a plan for suicide<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other signs and behaviours that might suggest that someone is at risk of suicide include:<\/strong><br \/>\n<b>TALK about<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having no reason to live.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling trapped or that there is no other way out of a situation, or no chance of improvement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in unbearable pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a burden to others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>MOOD\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant mood changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sense of helplessness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of shame or humiliation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>BEHAVIOUR<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing substance use, like drugs, alcohol and inhalants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging in high risk behaviour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving away prized possessions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What can be done?<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, programs and strategies are available that can make a difference.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think YOU are at risk of suicide yourself:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking about suicide is not shameful or a sign of weakness. Please remember \u2013 seeking\u00a0 help to address suicidal thoughts or a related mental health issue is an indication of your strength and resiliency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Start a conversation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; If you think that you might do something to hurt yourself, tell someone. Make sure you are around someone you trust. If you live alone, ask a friend or family member to stay with you. Connect with professional help if needed. If you don\u2019t know anyone or can\u2019t reach friends or family members, call your local crisis line. Try and think about it as any other conversation. You can describe what has happened, how you feel and what you help that you think you need. Ask for help to find support; in person, online or over the phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Make a call<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; If you feel you are at imminent risk of harming yourself, call 911 or go to the local hospital emergency department.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Have a safety plan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Keep your home safe by getting rid of ways to hurt yourself.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Remember things that have helped in the past.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Get treatment for mental health concerns.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Identify high-risk triggers or situations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Think of reasons for living.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Self-care: Take good care of yourself, including doing things you enjoy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Remember<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal crises are almost always temporary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems are seldom as great as they appear at first glance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reasons for living can help sustain a person in pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you think someone you know is at risk of suicide:<\/strong><br \/>\n<b><i>Do-s:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Express your concern by using specific examples of troubling behaviour you have observed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Listen non-judgmentally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Take time, listen closely and try to understand what the person is experiencing. Be aware of your own attitudes towards suicide and mental health issues. If the person feels you are judging them they will be less likely to open up to you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Encourage the person to seek support.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Be aware of resources. Encourage the person to seek support from informal resources such as family and friends, as well as professional supports such as counseling services, and distress lines.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Assess risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ask direct questions &#8211; &#8220;Are you having thoughts of suicide?&#8221;, &#8220;Are you thinking or killing yourself&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the person denies having suicidal thoughts or declines to talk, let him\/ her know that you are available if help is needed in the future. Provide resource information if<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appropriate. Offer to go with the person while they seek help. Follow up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-If you think there is immediate risk of suicide, do not leave them on their own. Take steps to keep them safe. Call a distress line or other organizations if you are unsure what to do. Call 911 if it is an emergency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; &#8211; &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><i>Don\u2019t-s:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criticize, preach or lecture, make the person feel guilty.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dramatize, get angry or offended.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignore \u2013 facts or statement made by the person.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dismiss their feelings, simplify things or use quick-fix approach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put yourself in danger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a promise that you cannot keep \u2013 never promise to keep the suicidal thoughts of someone a secret.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a
