I hope <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> all doing well and enjoying the gradually warming <\/span>sunshine<\/span>. In our last newsletter, we gave a brief introduction to the services offered by JSS. This time, <\/span>I\u2019d<\/span>\u00a0like to share a little more about how JSS operates and the <\/span>important role<\/span> of our Board of Directors.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Japanese Social Services (JSS) is a registered non-profit organization in Ontario and a recognized charity under the Canada Revenue Agency. Our mission is to serve the community, and as such, we do not <\/span>seek<\/span> to make a profit from service fees or donations. However, running our organization comes with necessary expenses\u2014such as staff salaries, rent, and operational costs\u2014which are covered through donations, financial support from various sources, membership fees, and service fees.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our clinical staff and volunteers work directly with clients to provide services, while the Board of Directors oversees JSS\u2019s operations with the support of administrative staff and volunteers. By law, all board members serve on a volunteer basis. Since JSS is a small organization with just four staff members, our board functions as a \u201cworking board,\u201d meaning our responsibilities go beyond governance. In addition to setting policies, strategic planning, and fundraising, board members are actively involved in HR, finance, public<\/span> and partner<\/span> relations, and program oversight.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, we have eight board members, including myself, who bring their <\/span>expertise<\/span> and experience to support JSS\u2019s mission. Last but not least<\/span>, I would like to <\/span>express sincere <\/span>appreciation<\/span> to all the donors and <\/span>sponsors<\/span> who supported JSS in the year of 2024. I want to thank <\/span>Toronto Buddhist <\/span>Church<\/span> for sponsoring the 2025 <\/span>Kakehashi<\/span>-no-kai<\/span> program, <\/span>and <\/span>Setsuko Thurlow for donating the NAJC Human Rights Award cash prize<\/span>. With your kind support, JSS will continue to make a <\/span>difference<\/span> in people<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s lives in 2025<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
