MOVIES: 英 Radiance

The Japan Foundation, Toronto

Directed by Naomi Kawase, 2017, 101 minutes
March 8th is International Women’s Day and March is also Women’s History Month, and what better way to celebrate this than watching films by Japanese women.
Radiance is the stunning new film by director Naomi Kawase.  The film is a beautiful drama about an encounter between two lost and wounded souls.  Misako (Ayame Misaki) is able to capture the beauty of cinema through her words, and shares this special gift by writing concise audio descriptions of films for the visually impaired.  The photographer Nakamori (Masatoshi Nagase) is going through a difficult point in life as he gradually loses his sight.  The two are brought together as Misako’s cinematic poetry helps to shine light through the film and slowly win the hearts of the two main characters.
Radiance was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes. At Cannes, it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
Other critically acclaimed films directed by Naomi Kawase are; Shara (2003), The Mourning Forest (Jury Grand Prix, 2007), Hanezu (2011), Still the Water (2014) and Sweet Bean (Un Certain Regard 2015).
The film screening is taking place at the Japan Foundation, Toronto on Thursday March 8th, 2018 at 6:30 PM (Free Admission)
